The period starts when both conditions are met simultaneously:
1. You hold a valid residence permit, and
2. You are physically present in Spain under that residence permit.
The process usually takes between 6 months and 2 years. Currently, processing times range from 6 to 9 months.
If you're from a country with a dual nationality agreement with Spain (e.g., Latin American countries, Philippines, Andorra), you don’t have to renounce your original nationality.
