UK Skilled Worker Visa Document Checklist

Already confirmed your employee needs a UK Skilled Worker Visa? This checklist is built for HR teams and global mobility managers who are past the "do I need a visa" stage and need the exact documents — both employer-side and employee-side — for a compliant 2026 application. Each item in the list below includes acceptance criteria, format rules, and the common errors that lead to refusal or sponsor licence compliance issues, so your team submits right the first time.

What is the UK Skilled Worker Visa?

The UK Skilled Worker Visa is the primary route for non-UK nationals outside Ireland to work in the United Kingdom for an approved employer. It replaced the Tier 2 (General) visa in December 2020 and operates on a points-based system — applicants must score 70 points across mandatory criteria: a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from a licensed UK employer, a role at RQF Level 6 or above (with limited exceptions for shortage occupations), English language proficiency at B2 CEFR (for new applications from 8 January 2026), and a minimum gross salary of £41,700 per year or the role's "going rate," whichever is higher.

The visa is granted for up to 5 years, after which sponsored workers may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Applications are submitted online via gov.uk; overseas applicants then attend a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to enrol biometrics. Note: the visa does not permit self-employment or work outside the sponsored role without updating the CoS.
