The UK Skilled Worker Visa is the primary route for non-UK nationals outside Ireland to work in the United Kingdom for an approved employer. It replaced the Tier 2 (General) visa in December 2020 and operates on a points-based system — applicants must score 70 points across mandatory criteria: a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from a licensed UK employer, a role at RQF Level 6 or above (with limited exceptions for shortage occupations), English language proficiency at B2 CEFR (for new applications from 8 January 2026), and a minimum gross salary of £41,700 per year or the role's "going rate," whichever is higher.
The visa is granted for up to 5 years, after which sponsored workers may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Applications are submitted online via gov.uk; overseas applicants then attend a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to enrol biometrics. Note: the visa does not permit self-employment or work outside the sponsored role without updating the CoS.

The UK Skilled Worker route involves employer obligations that go beyond gathering documents — sponsor licence compliance, SOC code accuracy, pay period reporting from April 2026, and right-to-work checks. One missed step can result in a licence downgrade, a refused visa, and a lost hire. Jobbatical handles the full process for UK-licensed sponsors, from CoS assignment to eVisa confirmation.
