France’s Safe Place for Science: The New Mobility Among International Researchers

France's safe place for scienceFrance's safe place for science

Following recent restrictions on science funding and freedom in the United States, European institutions are starting to act. One of the most direct and ambitious efforts so far is France’s Safe Place for Science initiative, launched by Aix-Marseille University to support researchers facing professional uncertainty in the US.

The program offers a structured, well-funded pathway for scientists to continue their work in a more stable academic environment. This program is part of a larger trend, showing how US policies are pushing research talent to Europe, and could be the start of a new wave of talent mobility.

About the Safe Place for Science Program

With €15 million in funding over three years, Aix-Marseille plans to host around 15 researchers through the Safe Place for Science initiative. The program is backed by the Amidex Foundation and a group of French institutions, including CNRS, INSERM, IRD, CEA, and Sciences Po Aix.

It’s designed to attract scientists working in fields that have been hit hardest by US policy changes - like health, climate, social science, and gender-related research.

So far, 40 researchers from institutions like Stanford, Yale, NASA, and NIH have responded to the call.

Why this matters for employers

For universities and research institutions across Europe, this kind of targeted program is a sign that interest from US-based researchers is real and growing. Many are already looking to move. And while France is taking the lead, there’s an opportunity for research institutions across Europe to attract top talent as well.

As researchers consider moving to Europe, many will look beyond initial programs to long-term opportunities. By creating attractive offers with the right support, employers can attract world-class talent already looking to relocate.

How to move forward

If you're considering bringing in international researchers, especially from the US, now is a good time to act. These professionals are highly skilled, mobile, and often ready to move quickly if they find the right fit.
